Museums in Belfast​

There are a number of museums in Belfast covering a range of themes and topics. The Ulster Museum is located in stunning botanic gardens and covers subjects such as art, archaeology, natural science and history. The Crumlin Road Gaol is a museum adapted from a former prison and features guided tours that explore its history and most notorious inmates. For those who enjoy a little military history, don’t miss the Royal Ulster Rifles Museum, where you can see weapons, military artifacts, uniforms and a number of personal effects from soldiers, detailing their experiences through various conflicts.

Castles and Ruins​

Belfast is home to a rich and storied history, so it comes as no surprise that there are a number of incredible castles and ruins to visit in the city. Belfast Castle offers stunning views of the city, as well as a café, beautiful grounds and a visitors centre. Carrickfergus Castle sits just outside Belfast in the town of Carrickfergus. This castle is well worth your time, as the 1177 structure is one of the oldest in the country. Dundrum Castle is located in County Down, and offers imposing ruins and a unique view over Dundrum Bay.

Perhaps you’d rather visit somewhere a little different, somewhere only available in Belfast. On Falls Road and Shankill Road, you’ll find the Peace Walls and Murals. These politically charged murals tell the story of Belfast’s conflict and peace process. The Stormont Estate is the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly, and offers stunning architecture as well as beautiful grounds to explore. For something a little more cultured, make sure to visit the Grand Opera House, where you can catch a play, an opera or another live performance.
